Abstract

The objective of this work is to determine the specific compressive and specific plateau strengths of the as received alporas at two different sizes focusing on their evolution of failures. The work is conducted because there is no clear information that explains the influence the sizes against the developed strength of alporas. The evolution of failures during compression is yet to be augmented. With less amount of metal this foam delivers greater occupied spaces than the parent material. The as received alporas was cut using an abrasive waterjet machine to the dimension of 2 cm x 2 cm x 1.2 cm and the 3 cm x 3 cm x 1.2 cm Testing the samples were conducted at the static compression speed of 1 mm/min. The evolution of failures was determined using a digital camera while SEM was used to determine surface failure after compression testing. The result showed that the specific compressive strength and the specific plateau strength of the smaller 2 cm x 2 cm x 1.2 cm sample were at 0.52 MPa/cm3 and 0.42 MPa/cm3 than the larger 3 cm x 3 cm x 1.2 cm of 0.24 MPa/cm3 and 0.21 MPa/cm3 respectively. The least defect with the smaller sample of 2 cm x 2 cm x 1.2 cm such as inclusion, cracks, poor struts interconnectivity and the areas of low density region gave higher strength property than the 3 cm x 3 cm x 1.2 cm sample. Ductile mode of failures were exemplified mainly by the cracking containing dimples. Vigilant observations showed deformation leading to the earliest failure were at the weakest region followed by those stronger ones near the end of the test indicating an apparent non-uniform structural property within the foam.
