Abstract

This study examines the religious didactics from the perspective of Islam in the context of International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) based on a theological-based theoretical framework on climate justice (water ethics). Its goal is to analyze selected modules that integrate environmental ethics – climate justice (water ethics). The significance of this work lies on how the IIUM didactical method addresses climate justice in the light of the fundamental Qur’ānic theological concepts, namely, Tawḥīd [The Oneness of Allah(ﷻ)], Khilāfah (Vicegerency), Amānah (Trust), Al-Tawāzun (Moderation/Balance/Proportion), ‘Adl (Justice), ‘Ibādah (An Act of Worship), Taklīf (Responsibility), Muḥāsabah (Accountability), and Maqāṣid al-Sharī‘ah (Objectives of Islamic Law). Descriptive and narrative analytical methods are used in this paper to address, firstly, IIUM’s didactic approach towards Islamic education, which is illustrated with concrete examples, and secondly, the theological-based theoretical framework on climate justice. The findings of this research support the need for the integration of a theological-based theoretical framework on climate justice into religious and inter-religious teacher training practical manual/handbook/module.
