Abstract

Batu bersurat pertama dunia Epik Gilgamesh dan penulisan Mismariyyah Epik Gilgamesh merupakan hasil tulisan kuno yang dianggap paling awal pernah dijumpai setakat ini. Ditemui oleh seorang British bernama George Smith pada tahun 1862, sejumlah 12 tablet dikumpulkan, dan pada setiap tablet itu terkandung bait syair yang setiapnya mempunyai 300 baris (Samuel Noah Kramer, 1959: 150, 151, 183 − 184). Ahli arkeologi berpendapat bahawa tablet ini merupakan batu bersurat yang paling lengkap pernah dijumpai mengatasi bahan dokumentasi sastera lain, termasuklah Illiad dan Odessey karangan Homer (Taha Baqir, 1986: 41) berdasarkan kenyataan Profesor B. Landsberger ketika muktamar di Paris pada tahun 1958. Penceritaan dalam manuskrip ini sangat terperinci dan lengkap jalan penceritaannya, tidak seperti manuskrip lain yang kebanyakannya tidak lengkap atau rosak.
