Abstract
An ideal wastewater treatment process should be simple, cost-effective, and capable of achieving high removal efficiency. In recent years, heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification (HN-AD) have gained attention as a promising approach for removing nitrogenous compounds such as ammonium nitrogen (NH₄⁺-N), nitrite nitrogen (NO₂⁻-N), and nitrate nitrogen (NO₃⁻-N). In this study, the potential of Bacillus tequilensis to perform HN-AD was evaluated using 1% v/v diluted wastewater with an initial ammonium nitrogen (NH₄⁺-N) concentration of 65 mg/L. Batch experiments were conducted with varying glucose concentrations (0–4% w/v) and incubated overnight at 37°C. The treatment performance was monitored by measuring changes in ammonium, nitrite, nitrate, pH, and bacterial growth. Without glucose supplementation, the culture showed minimal ammonium removal and considerable nitrite accumulation, suggesting incomplete nitrogen conversion. However, when glucose was added at 3% and 4% (w/v), ammonium removal improved significantly (approximately 65–72%) and nitrite accumulation gradually decreased. While nitrate levels remained relatively stable at lower glucose concentrations, a noticeable decrease was observed at the highest glucose concentration. This finding suggests that the increased carbon availability may influence the nitrogen transformation pathway and enhance overall removal performance. This result indicates that carbon availability significantly impacts nitrogen transformation by Bacillus tequilensis in high-ammonium wastewater environments.
