Abstract
Anxiety in a foreign language is not a current issue but it is multidimensional and construct which always happens and a never-ending story for decades hence worth to be revisited. This study on anxiety involved 280 student respondents from 18 Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur lower secondary schools that offer the Arabic Language as a Foreign Language. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the levels of anxiety among the students learning Arabic Language as a Foreign Language, particularly the Arabic speaking skill. Horwitz’s FLCAS (Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale) was adapted to assess the levels of types of anxiety, namely; communication apprehension (CA), fear of negative evaluation (FNE) and test anxiety (TA). The findings show that appearance of anxiety in the 3 dimensions and the level of anxiety recorded in these three is all high while the highest is fear of negative evaluation. In conclusion, anxiety in the Arabic Language as a Foreign Language subject does exist, especially in terms of speaking skill.
