Abstract
The eighth, ninth, and tenth centuries CE, taken together, may be identified with the formative period of Islamic civilisation. The meaning of the "formative period" in the civilisational sense is now briefly explained. The foundation of this civilisation, which implies a societal order, was laid down by the Prophet Muhammad () in Medina (formerly Yathrib) in the first half of the seventh century CE over ten years (622–632 CE).
