Abstract
Market instability, environmental concerns and various types of crises in fossil fuel industry have led the researchers, scientists and industries look for sustainable fuel and energy sources. Biomass is one of the potential sustainable source of energy, which has the possibilities not only to support the humanity by providing energy, but also got potential in reducing emission of greenhouse gases. Energy from biomass can be produced from a wide a verities of raw and refined materials such as wood, solid wastes, agricultural residues, landscape wastes, sewage sludge, etc. Among various biomass produced from different types of sources, sewage sludge is one of the categories which requires additional money to be disposed into the landfill sites. Therefore, objective of this chapter is to discuss about the utilization of sewage sludge to generate heat energy in the form of fuel gas by gasification process. Laboratory tests were conducted to determine the heat content of sewage sludge produced from the sewage treatment plants located in Malaysia. An updraft gasifier was designed to produce heat energy from the sewage sludge wastes and this updraft gasifier can optimize the heating value of the product gas. The product gas from the gasification process can be converted into electricity by a generator. It was calculated that each tonne of sewage sludge could produce 3.24 MWh of electricity through the gasification process.
