Abstract

This book is designed for pre-university, college, and university students who wish to understand how sustainable production and consumption are interwoven within the broader goals of human well-being (al-falāḥ) and environmental stewardship (khilāfah). It integrates insights from economics, sociology, ethics, and Islamic worldview to help learners comprehend how choices in the marketplace — whether by individuals, producers, or policymakers — affect the balance of society and creation (mīzān). By examining the dynamics of production systems, advertising influences, consumer behaviour and resource management students learn to recognize how economic activities can either sustain or disrupt the Sejahtera order of peace, prosperity, and harmony. Throughout the chapters, students encounter real-world cases, reflective exercises, and cross-cultural comparisons that reveal the barriers to sustainable practices — from policy inconsistencies, market manipulation, and greenwashing to affordability, accessibility, and behavioural inertia. Each challenge is examined through both global frameworks like the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and local principles such as the Sejahtera Academic Framework inspired by the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). This dual approach ensures that sustainability is understood not only as a technical or policy issue but as a moral responsibility rooted in the Tawhidic worldview and expressed through Ummatic excellence. Ultimately, this book aspires to nurture ethical consumers and responsible producers — individuals who make choices guided by taqwā (God-consciousness), iḥsān (excellence), and ʿadl (justice). Students are encouraged to align their personal, social, and professional decisions with values that promote fairness, transparency, compassion and stewardship. They are invited to rethink the meaning of success beyond material accumulation and to embrace a lifestyle that embodies gratitude (shukr), moderation (wasatiyyah), and care for all creation (raḥmah). As future leaders and changemakers, Readers of this book carry the potential to reshape the global narrative of production and consumption. With the knowledge, frameworks, and faith-based ethics presented here, they can influence policies, industries, and communities toward a more balanced and just economic system. Sustainable Production and Consumption is thus more than a textbook — it is a call to action for a generation ready to embody the values of Sejahtera Sustainability—a world of harmony, equity, and sustainability under the guidance of Allah.
