Abstract

The cooperative movement in Malaysia practices cooperation within individual cooperatives. Cooperation among cooperatives across state boundaries and principal activities is essential, particularly in sustaining food security through sustainable agriculture. Various activities within the food security value chain, including farming, financing, weeding, fertilizing, harvesting, processing, distribution, and profit generation, require strong collaboration among the 14,000 cooperatives in Malaysia. These activities encompass Islamic microfinance, sustainable food production, and community supported agriculture. Moreover, the role of Islamic principles and waqf land development in achieving sustainability is critical. However, there are structural inefficiencies that hinder innovation in enhancing Malaysia's food security and sustainable development. This study aims to explore the influence of ta’awun (mutual cooperation) among cooperatives in Malaysia in sustaining food security through sustainable agriculture. The study employed focus group discussions (FGDs) with managers of cooperatives in Malaysia. FGDs were conducted in every state, with five managers participating in each session. In total, 70 managers participated in the discussions. The FGDs identified several themes, drivers, and factors influencing taawun among cooperative movements in Malaysia in sustaining food security through sustainable agriculture. Participants suggested the need for a conglomerate of cooperatives from various sectors to engage in sustainable agriculture activities, ultimately sustaining food security for the community. Future research should employ multiple case study methods to gain deeper insights into the influence of taawun among cooperative movements in Malaysia.
