Abstract

Disability justice and artificial intelligence (AI) have become increasingly interconnected as digital technologies reshape access to edu- cation, healthcare, employment, communica- tion, and social participation. This entry examines AI from a disability justice perspec- tive, emphasizing that technological systems can both expand inclusion and reproduce new forms of exclusion. Beyond assistive technol- ogy, the discussion addresses issues of digital rights, accessibility, participation, representa- tion, and algorithmic fairness. Attention is given to emerging technologies such as large language models, generative AI, computer vision, and speech recognition, which offer new opportunities for accessibility and inde- pendence among persons with disabilities. At the same time, concerns regarding algorithmic bias, unequal access, and the underrepresenta- tion of disability perspectives remain signifi- cant challenges. This entry proposes a conceptual framework that situates AI within a broader socio-technical ecosystem and argues that disability justice requires inclusive design, meaningful participation, transparency, and accountability in AI development and implementation.
