Abstract

Nursing profession is a branch of health care sector that is focusing on the care of individuals, families and communities, which requires special knowledge, skill and preparation. But it is sad to note that after COVID 19 hit the past couple of years, government hospitals and clinics have reported a shortage of nurses. As one of the strategies to attract the youngsters to pursue in Foundation of Nursing (NUS), the university has decided to open its door to SPM Art Stream leavers, and a lower requirement for Science stream starting from semester 1, 2021/2022. This study was undertaken to determine the effect of prior knowledge and other possible factors affecting the academic performance. Theory of planned behavior (TPB) was integrated to evaluate the individual’s attitude, subjective norm, and perceived control as accurate predictors of behavioral intention to complete the program among the NUS students of Centre for Foundation Studies, International Islamic University Malaysia (CFS, IIUM). Descriptive analysis and partial least square structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) was adopted to study the relationship among all factors. The results revealed significant findings where this NUS batch showed a worrying performance, with poor academic ability and unusual trend. Only 23% with clear bass based on the CGPA. Thus, this study can create awareness among the students at the preparatory level so that they are well aware of the actions required to attain certain goal.
