Abstract

This is an introductory lecture on Islamic Architecture to those new or oblivious to the concept of architecture in comparison to mainstream architecture. The lecture defines the fundamental aspect of what is Islam, Muslim and the term Islamic before relating it to architecture and the built environment. The lecture give a brief insight on the orientalist view of Islam and the definition of Islamic architecture that has been woven into main stream architecture without casting it holistically but rather as a fantasise anecdotes of the colonised exotic world of the east.. The lecture ends with researchers interpretation of Islamic Architecture through their observations and understanding of Muslims way of life and the Islamic teachings through the Quran and Sunnah; with the concept of Tauhid and Khalifah - i.e. relationship of Man and Creator, Man and Man and Man and the Environment. The lecture do not prescribe any form or looks to describe Islamic architecture but enough to breathe the values and essences deemed by sharia as architecture that causes no harm and thus leaves designers to their imagination. .
