Abstract

The angle a newspaper takes to cover a story is known as framing. Media outlets' framing of sustainability concerns is a vital indicator of public opinion on these topics because the media is where most people obtain their information about these matters. To learn how Malaysian newspapers cover and frame issues related to sustainable energy, a deductive, quantitative methodological approach was employed in articles published in four Malaysian English and Malay newspapers between January 2018 and September 2019. The data reveal that despite sharing some similarities in the way the English and Malay newspapers cover news about sustainable energy, it is the English newspapers that are more proactive in promoting the energy problem for the readers. In addition, this research expands our awareness of the environmental and sustainability concerns that are context-specific and those that journalists confront when covering them.
