Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Umrah is an Islamic religious ritual which held at a specific place in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. During umrah season some of the pilgrims facing difficulties in food intake due to the changes of hot climate and different food culture. The objective of this study was to evaluate the nutrients (macro and micro) and energy intake as well as the energy expenditure among umrah pilgrims from Kuantan, Malaysia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: About 59 subjects (aged 13-76 years) were convenient randomly chosen to fill the food diary and daily activities record for three days during umrah in Mecca. The information from food dairies and daily activities records were analysed using Nutritionist Pro 4.0 (Azzya system, USA). Demographic and anthropometric data of the subjects were evaluated as the factors that affect the energy intake and expenditure. The nutrients intake also been compared to Malaysian Recommended Nutrients Intake (RNI) 2005. All the data were then analysed using statistical analysis software, SPSS 12.0 for Windows. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The results showed that the mean value of energy intake of umrah pilgrims from Kuantan, Malaysia was in recommended range as recommended by Malaysian RNI (2005) but the mean value of energy expenditure was below the recommendation value as suggested by Mahan et al., (2008) but not significantly different at p>0.05 (P=0.40). The mean value of energy intake of the subjects was also lower than energy expenditure but not significantly different at p>0.05 (P=0.10). Only the mean values of energy expenditure according to gender and BMI are significantly different at p<0.05. Energy expenditure of the subject has significant (P<0.05) positive correlation (r=0.828) with their weights where the weight of subject increase the more energy was used by the subject. CONCLUSION: This study showed overall picture about nutrients intake and energy expenditure of umrah pilgrims from Kuantan, Malaysia for further studies and interventions.
