Abstract

Background: Soft skills are the underlying principles that trademark for the nursing profession and excellent nursing care. Indeed, current structured nursing clinical skill assessment on serving medication procedures are emphasised too much on dexterity and frequently lack out on assessment of soft skill elements. Moreover, serving medication to a client is more than giving the medication to them. It must be applied the soft skills while serving medication to them. Objective: This study aimed to examine the soft skill elements in objectively structured clinical skill assessment on medication procedure in the undergraduate nursing programme. Methods: A clinical audit was carried on the retrospective structured clinical skill assessment’s exam questions by using the clinical skill assessment index I (CSAI-I) instrument. A total of 40 medication procedures set of exam questions were assessed. Its’ included clinical case scenario, procedure checklist, examiner’s comments, and documentation charts of medication procedures. Result: Among the audited 40 medications procedures, administering oral medication accounted for 14 (35%), administering the eye and ear medication 9 (22.5%), and the remaining fall under other categories. Interestingly, the soft skill elements such as communication skill 38 (95%), teamwork skill 40 (100%), social skills and responsibilities 3 (7.5%), critical thinking skill 1(2.5%), professional and ethical decision-making skill 1(2.5%), numeracy skill 1 (2.5%) and interpersonal skill 3 (7.5%) were found at the 40 medication procedure checklists. Problem-solving skill and leadership skill were not found in this clinical audit. Conclusion: There are many things that can be improved in the structured nursing clinical skill assessment on medication procedure such as the type of medication and the components of the soft skill elements. Thus, it is crucial to have a well-structured clinical skill assessment exam question to produce holistic graduate nurses who equip with clinical skills and soft skills for the current healthcare delivery system.
