Abstract
E100-E199 is referring to food colouring additives which have been coded by the European Union as an indication for their approval for the colorants safety aspects. Since early 90s until today, the controversial issues with regard to the negative health impact of the synthetic colorants remain circulating around the world. Additionally, the consumers' awareness and concern towards more natural ingredients in their food have posed an increased demand in natural colorants. In this article, authors have reviewed and discussed the raw materials and processes in the production of the food colorants as well as the health impact of the colorants from Islamic perspectives.
