Abstract

Mollusks are one of the main macroinvertebrates that play a significant ecological role in nutrient dynamics in the mangrove ecosystem because they form an essential link within the food web as predators, herbivores, detritivores and filter feeders. They are useful bioindicators of environmental pollution, due to their methods of filter-feeding. Based on the above contexts, the antioxidant properties of mollusc species Nerita articulata was investigated in a mangrove estuary, Kuantan, Pahang around the east coast of Malaysia. In the present study, different antioxidant tests were conducted to evaluate the antioxidant activities of water, methanol and dichloromethane: methanol extracts of N. articulata. The results were compared with alpha- tocopherol and ascorbic acid, which are generally known as antioxidant compounds. The percentage of scavenging activities and lipid peroxidation inhibition for each of the extracts were also determined. The extracts were found to have different levels of antioxidant properties in the test models used. All extracts had strongly inhibited lipid peroxidation and also had shown low radical scavenging activities. Therefore, this species could be considered as a significant antioxidant source in terms of lipid peroxidation. The study indicates that these extracts from the mollusc N. articulata have good antioxidant activities that can be harnessed as leads for potential bioactive compounds.
