Abstract

Vertically aligned Carbon Nanotubes (VACNTs) which are commonly referred to as CNT forests, have many potential engineering applications for its attractive mechanical, electrical, optical, and thermal properties. CNT forest is an attractive option for various applications in the field of Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS), micro-chip heat sinks, field-emitters, gas sensors, photovoltaics, fuel cells, and synthetic unidirectional adhesive tapes. However, micropatterning of CNT forest is needed for its better integration to micro electro mechanical (MEMS) based devices. In situ patterning during the CNT forest growth has limitation in terms of achieving true 3-D patterns. This talk will present our research on micropatterning of the CNT forest in various ex-situ methods. All these methods have their own pros and cons. The talk starts with patterning technique using electro-discharge machining and continues further to discuss patterning methods using mechanical bending. It is to note that CNT forest is known to be the darkest material on earth that can absorb light almost completely in the wide range of spectrum. However, bending of the CNTs in the array of VACNT showed a remarkable optical transformation. Dark absorber CNT forest started to reflect light like a shiny mirror. The reflectance of the CNT forest was increased by two orders of magnitude. We thoroughly investigated the nature and reason of this reflection which will also be discussed in this talk.
