Abstract

A positive learning environment is vital for knowledge and skills acquisition. Since students spent longer times in the classrooms, all tangible and intangible factors within the spatial are influential to the learning process and experience. One of the current challenges of Tahfiz education is to achieve an ideal design of the learning environment that suits the common practice in Qur’an memorization known as hafazan. Subsequently, this study examines what is known concerning the effects of Tahfiz students’ ecology on their hafazan performance and perceived the relationship between the environment and their performance. Data were collected from 10 days of an experiment to 24 Tahfiz students who were assigned to five settings and different type of sittings; cross-legged and sitting on a chair. The five settings are; white-wall setting, green-wall setting, wooden-wall finish setting, face to face setting and window facing setting. The experiment was designed to simulate the existing learning environment, testing the existing colour theories and testing the preference findings that was done earlier. The findings showed the male students have a more specific pattern in environmental influences while the female students are more distributed in the environmental influences of patterns. The male students also performed better when they are in cross-legged position while the female students were doing better in both types of sitting. The emotional responses showed impressive outcomes elaborates how each of the environment plays an essential role in supporting their memorization process. The findings are significant for the related institutions to reflects the effectiveness of the existing environment in students’ engagement in Quran memorization. It is included in the Tahfiz Environmental Engagement Model (TEEM) and can use as JAKIM guideline for quality and standard reference of Tahfiz institution.
