Abstract

In a fire scenario, neither a battery nor pressurized air as a power source is a viable option; however, pressurized Carbon dioxide (CO2) gas can be an alternate power source for driving an air motor to power up a firefighting robot. Thus, this study evaluates the performance of an air motor fed with CO2 gas that was generated by an in-situ gas generator for firefighting robot actuator. The methodology for evaluating the performance of the CO2 gas generator along with the test rig setup is presented in this paper. A comparative analysis of air and in-situ CO2 gas was conducted and reported. Similar trends were observed when using air and in-situ CO2 gas as power sources, though results using air as the power source were slightly better. Furthermore, it was discovered that using air as a power source results in higher efficiency than using the in-situ CO2 gas. As the use of air is not a viable option, CO2 gas remains as an alternative power source for driving firefighting robots.
