Abstract

This chapter proposes a Qur’anic-based lifelong learning framework for elderly Muslims grounded in Tawhidic epistemology. It understands the pursuit of knowledge as a continuous spiritual responsibility that integrates faith, ethical conduct, and purposeful living throughout the lifespan. Drawing on Qur’anic teachings, Hadith, Islamic scholarship, and contemporary literature on lifelong education, the chapter examines how these foundations can inform educational provision that responds to older adults’ physical, cognitive, emotional, and spiritual needs. The proposed framework comprises three interconnected components: educational content, teacher criteria, and delivery methods. Its design is guided by six principles: alignment with Qur’anic teachings, responsiveness to the needs of the elderly, integration of Hadith and Sunnah, Islamic and cultural sensitivity, lifelong learning objectives, and flexibility and accessibility. Teachers are expected to combine knowledge and wisdom with empathy, patience, respect, and teaching methods adapted to elderly learners. Delivery encompasses face-to-face learning in accessible mosques and educational centres, alongside ethically guided digital learning supported by appropriate assistance and digital literacy. The chapter highlights the importance of inclusive facilities, reliable religious knowledge, and meaningful human interaction in sustaining participation. By translating Tawhidic foundations into practical educational design, the framework offers guidance for educators and Islamic institutions seeking to support beneficial knowledge, spiritual enrichment, dignified participation, and preparation for the Hereafter among elderly Muslims.
