Abstract

Alveolar osteitis (AO), commonly known as “dry socket”, is the most prevalent complication following tooth extraction, affecting an estimated 1–5% of routine extractions and up to 30% of impacted third molar extractions (Cardoso et al., 2024). AO is characterised by the disintegration or absence of the blood clot at the extraction site, leading to exposure of the underlying bone. Clinically, AO typically manifests within 2 to 3 days post-extraction and is characterised by severe, persistent pain radiating to surrounding areas, accompanied by a foul taste, halitosis, and occasionally regional lymphadenitis. Although AO is a self-limiting condition that typically resolves within 5 to 10 days, it often requires multiple postoperative visits for symptom management, including irrigation and medicated dressing, with some patients needing up to four follow-up treatments.
