Abstract
Oral cancer is the sixth most common cancer worldwide, resulting in 377,713 new cases and 177,757 deaths in 2020. These figures represent an increase from 354,864 new cases and 177,384 deaths reported in 2018 (Tranby et al., 2022). In Malaysia, the incidence of oral cancer ranks among the top twenty most common cancers (Raman et al., 2022). The high mortality rate in oral cancer patients is primarily attributable to late diagnosis; those diagnosed at stage IV face a fourfold higher risk of mortality compared with those diagnosed at stage I (Davaatsend et al., 2023). Hence, earlystage diagnosis is necessary. Current diagnostic techniques for oral cancer generally involve comprehensive clinical examination, costly biochemical investigations, and invasive biopsy procedures. Investigation of biomarkers in biological samples such as blood, urine, and saliva offers promise for early cancer diagnosis (Khurshid et al., 2018). As saliva collection is considered non-invasive, its utilisation can facilitate easier and more reliable diagnosis.
