Abstract

This teaching case presents the entrepreneurial journey of Mr. Sam Luhur, founder of Syarikat Sam Luhur, whose business philosophy is grounded in 'ubudiyyah(total devotion to Allah) and the Tawhidic paradigm of Ummatic Excellence. Beginning as a university student operating a small printing business while pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration, Mr. SamLuhurgradually diversified into government printing, educational travel, Umrah services, property brokerage, and agricultural enterprises. Throughout more than 26 years of entrepreneurship, he consistently viewed business not merely as an economic activity but as a platform for da'wah, community empowerment, humanitarian service, leadership development, and institution-building. Guided by his Murabbi Mursyid, Islamic scholars, and the educational philosophy of Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor, Mr Sam Luhur developed enterprises that integrated commercial sustainability with spiritual purpose through social, relational, and spiritual capital. The case also explores ethical dilemmas involving customer trust, integrity, succession without biological heirs, and the preservation of organisational values beyond the founder. It concludes with Sam's strategic dilemma of whether to continue expanding his businesses, consolidate them into enduring mission-driven institutions, or establish productive waqf-inspired initiatives that sustain education, elderly care, and community development. The case enables discussion of strategic management, Islamic entrepreneurship, stakeholder stewardship, succession planning, and the long-term sustainability of values-based enterprises.
