Abstract

Parents’ responsibilities have become more challenging today as digital technology influences many aspects of children's daily lives. The challenges do not only revolve around controlling and managing screen time. Beyond that, parents also need to be able to guide their children on online responsibilities and help them respond to online risks while fostering values within the online environment. In Malaysia, these responsibilities towards children are influenced by local culture, religion, language and uneven levels of digital literacy among parents. Thus, this study aims to explain how the development of Platform KID, a digital parenting website built for Malaysian parents could reduce gaps in parents’ digital literacy. Based on the ADDIE model framework, Platform KID was developed phase by phase from Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation stages. The main features of the platform were developed based on a need analysis that was conducted previously in earlier research. Thus, an identity homepage integrating with multimodal elements such as structured online learning modules, searchable content area and interactive section has been adopted in this development for users. Early results showed positive beta-testing scores and encouraging feedback. However, the platform usage analysis highlights that strong user retention, a mobile-friendly platform and an in-depth engagement approach are important to enhance platform performance. In conclusion, the study shows that the ADDIE model serves as an effective development framework for Platform KID that is educationally and culturally relevant to meet the needs of Malaysian parents.
