Abstract

The Malayan gaur, an endangered species found only in Peninsular Malaysia, faces a declining population despite various conservation efforts. Limited research exists on the experiences of workers involved in such efforts. This study explores the experiences of workers at Jenderak Selatan Wildlife Conservation Centre, the challenges they face during conservation, and their perspectives on factors contributing to the species' decline. The aim of this study is to investigate workers' experiences in conserving the Malayan gaur at Jenderak Selatan Wildlife Conservation Centre, Pahang, and identify factors driving its population decline. The purposive sampling method were used in the data collection and semi-structured interviews were conducted among the workers at the Jenderak Selatan Wildlife Conservation Centre, Pahang. The study identified three key themes: the job scope of workers, challenges faced during conservation, and factors contributing to the decline in the Malayan gaur population. Workers are responsible for maintaining the welfare of the Malayan gaurs and participating in rescueactivities across Pahang. However, they face challenges such as outdated and insufficient facilities, aggressive gaurs, complex job processes, limited resources, and encounters with poisonous snakes. The primary factors contributing to the declining number of Malayan gaurs include habitat loss, illegal hunting, and the inability of gaurs to survive in the wild. Conserving the Malayan gaurs requires dedication and overcoming challenges. Conservation efforts should be prioritised, with adequate funding for improved infrastructure, resources, and worker safety. These steps are crucial to protect both the gaurs and those committed to their conservation.
