Abstract

This article examines the growing implications of artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled warfare and intensifying geopolitical rivalry in West Asia for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Against the backdrop of escalating regional conflicts and the increasing use of AI in intelligence gathering, predictive targeting, cyber operations, and information warfare, the article argues that the international system is entering a more volatile era defined by “raw politics,” where technological superiority increasingly shapes strategic outcomes. Drawing from contemporary geopolitical developments and Professor Vali Nasr’s insights on the shifting global order, the article explores how the convergence of military AI, great-power competition, and fragmented multilateralism challenges ASEAN’s traditional balancing strategies. It contends that ASEAN can no longer rely solely on neutrality or conventional diplomatic hedging, as technological dependency and strategic vulnerability are becoming central security concerns. Instead, ASEAN must strengthen its strategic autonomy by investing in technological resilience, digital governance, and deeper regional cooperation in emerging security domains. The article concludes that ASEAN’s future relevance will depend on its ability to adapt to AI-driven geopolitical transformation while preserving its role as a stabilising force in an increasingly fragmented world order.
