Abstract

This paper explores the concept of fitnah, specifically slander, as presented in the Qur’an and Hadith, and examines its relevance in today’s digital world shaped by artificial intelligence (AI). Drawing from classical Islamic commentaries as well as contemporary tafsīr, the study highlights how slander is not only a personal sin but also a serious social harm that affects truth, trust, and community cohesion. In the age of AI, slander takes new forms through technologies like deepfakes, fake news, and algorithm-driven misinformation. These tools increase the speed and scale of falsehood, making fitnah even more dangerous and difficult to control. To address this, the paper outlines four key ethical principles from the Qur’an: tabayyun (verification), adab al-lisān (observing the ethics of speech), satr al-ʿawrat (concealing others’ faults), and ḥusn al-ẓann (positive opinion). These values offer a practical framework for responding to slander and misinformation in the digital age. The study concludes that Islamic teachings remain highly relevant and provide strong ethical guidance for facing the challenges of modern technology.
