Abstract

Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) is part of the IIUM Sejahtera Academic Framework (SAF). One of the components of SAF is humanising education throughMaqasid AshShariah and An SDG programme initiated by the Department of Biology was to stimulate students on the importance of mangrove forests in Malaysia. The programme involves planting mangroves at Pantai Cempaka, Kuantan. This programme involved Department of Biology staff and Biological Sciences students. The program was designed to address SDG 14, which focuses on the sustainable management of oceans and coastal areas, while highlighting the significant value of mangrove forests to local communities. The rehabilitation of mangrove ecosystems also contributes to the achievement of several other SDGs, including the eradication of poverty and hunger (SDGs 1 and 2), the promotion of sustainable livelihoods and economic growth (SDG 8), action against climate change (SDG 13), and the prevention of biodiversity loss (SDG 15). A survey was conducted among students who participated in the program. The results revealed that the students recognize the importance of mangrove forests in sustaining biodiversity and protecting ecosystems from natural disasters. Additionally, they believe these forests provide valuable natural resources and offer opportunities for ecotourism, which in turn promotes local economic growth.
