Abstract
The vernacular press, concentrated in major cities with human resources such as capital owners, editors, and writers in Java and Sumatra Islands, promoted nationalist and Islamic-oriented thoughts and movements. To some or more extensive extent, pursued independence ideas through publications that disseminated information and raised public consciousness. Moreover, during this process, the political developments in the final years of the Ottoman State, leading up to the establishment of the Republic of Türkiye, attracted the attention of the intellectual circles in the Archipelago in line with their approach to Sun Yat Sen, Chinese nationalist leader and Mahatma Gandhi, the leader of the Indian independence movement.
