Abstract

In this study, a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hybrid with oil palm empty fruit bunch (EFB) cellulose nanocrystal aerogel was prepared with the freeze-drying method. The fabricated PVA hybrid aerogels have been irradiated with an electron beam (EB) at low doses ranging from 5, 10, and 20 kGy. The properties of non-irradiated and irradiated PVA hybrid aerogels were compared and characterized by gel content, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and uniaxial compression tests. Results showed that the compressive strength and Young modulus of aerogel samples improved with the addition of cellulose nanocrystals and increased irradiation doses, significantly in samples irradiated with 10 kGy. The irradiation-induced crosslinking reaction was evident from the FTIR analysis. The EB irradiation also affects the adsorption capacity of the PVA hybrid aerogel.
