Abstract
Food Industries in Malaysia have implemented the Malaysian Halal Certification Scheme (MHCS) on voluntary basis for nearly 50 years. This long experience should be exploited to boost the implementation of mandatory MHCS involving all categories of food premises. The aim of this qualitative study was to analyze the opinion of renown academic and religious scholars in Malaysia whether mandatory MHCS is suitable or not to be implemented involving all categories of food premises. Seven academic and religious scholars were purposedly selected and interviewed using thematic guided questionnaire. All of their opinions were recorded and discussed in detail according to the themes. The result show that even though there were many different opinions among the respondents, but all the opinions were toward an agreement to allow the mandatory implementation of MHCS in Malaysia. The implementation should be by stages according to the factors of races, religious and the size of business. The halal scheme also must be simple without compromising of food safety and quality factors. The implementation should also accompany by awareness campaign to the society.
