Abstract

Penterjemahan metafora sering dikira sebagai salah satu masalah ketidakbolehan menterjemah. Hal ini kerana metafora umumnya terkait dengan sesuatu secara tidak langsung. Oleh yang demikian ia rumit dan sukar diterjemah. Metafora juga dipengaruhi oleh budaya. Maka, penterjemah harus teliti dalam penterjemahan metafora. Justeru, kajian ini menfokuskan kepada aspek terjemahan metafora dari bahasa Arab ke bahasa Melayu yang terdapat dalam novel Majdulin karya Mustafa Lutfi al-Manfaluti terjemahan Adli Yaacob. Objektif utama kajian ialah menganalisis kaedah terjemahan yang sesuai bagi penterjemahan metafora dari bahasa Arab ke bahasa Melayu bagi teks novel. Ini dilakukan melalui kaedah dan pendekatan penterjemahan metafora yang dikemukakan oleh Peter Newmark. Data kajian ini diambil dari teks novel Majdulin oleh al-Manfaluti dalam bahasa Arab dan novel Majdulin yang diterjemahkan ke dalam bahasa Melayu oleh Adli Yaacob terbitan IIUM Press tahun 2020. Memandangkan terjemahan novel ini baru sahaja selesai diterbitkan tahun lepas maka belum ada apa-apa kajian dilakukan terhadapnya. Sebelum ini novel Majdulin telahpun diterjemah ke dalam Bahasa Indonesia oleh A.S. Al-Attas. Dikatakan bahawa penterjemahan ke bahasa Indonesia itu didorong kuat oleh polemik yang menuduh HAMKA memplagiat Majdulin untuk karyanya Tenggelamnya Kapal van der Wijck. Atas latar belakang tersebut kajian ini melihat kepentingan mengkaji karya terjemahan ini. The translation of metaphors is often considered one of the problems of untranslatability. This is because metaphors are generally related to something indirectly. Therefore, it is complex and difficult to translate. Metaphors are also influenced by culture. Thus, the translator must be meticulous in translating metaphors. Consequently, this study focuses on the aspect of translating metaphors from Arabic to Malay found in the novel Majdulin by Mustafa Lutfi al-Manfaluti, translated by Adli Yaacob. The main objective of the study is to analyze appropriate translation methods for translating metaphors from Arabic to Malay in the novel text. This is done through the methods and approaches to metaphor translation proposed by Peter Newmark. The study data is taken from the Arabic text of the novel Majdulin by al-Manfaluti and the Malay-translated novel Majdulin by Adli Yaacob, published by IIUM Press in 2020. Since the translation of this novel was just published last year, no studies have been conducted on it yet. Previously, the novel Majdulin had been translated into Indonesian by A.S. Al-Attas. It is said that the translation into Indonesian was strongly motivated by the controversy accusing HAMKA of plagiarizing Majdulin for his work Tenggelamnya Kapal van der Wijck. Against this background, this study examines the importance of studying this translated work.
