Abstract
It is implicit that the name of Abu al Hasan Ali bin Ismail Ash'ry is used connecting with the Shafi school of thought in many places and circumstances. It is evident that most of the teachers of Imam Ash'ry belong to the Shafi school of thoughts. Simultaneously, several biographers and historians also attributed Imam Ash'ry to Shafi school of thoughts while scrutinizing Juristic sects and/or the methodological sources of Islamic Jurisprudence. Hence, this study aims to elaborate the reality of this association and explain similarities and differences between both of them along with the impacts that led to usuli discourse. It is imperative to mention that it is hard to find a thorough academic work exploring Ash'ry's usuli contribution and its roots that were connected to Shafi in the history and impacts that influenced this personality who is considered as an incredible Islamic scholar. By doing so, the researcher employed inductive methods in identifying the roots scattered in the books dealing with usul and biographies of scholars. Further, the researcher employs analytical methods to figure out the fundamental factors. Therefore, this study reorganises the chapters and parts of this relationship through making comparison between them and elobarating similarities and discrepancies. Moreover, this study has taken into account, the historical developments of Shafi Usul through scrutinizing scholars of Shafi school of thought that Ash'ry had met. The main finding is that this helps absorb precise idea about the reality of Ash'ry school of thoughts and his usuli thoughts along with that for a certain extent his usuli thoughts were compatible with the Shafi school of thoughts or not.
