Abstract

Counterfeiting of products are damaging the business of original products globally due to the fabrication. It affects market share and revenue of the company. Besides, counterfeiting products are deceiving the customers. This study aims to investigate the factors that influence customers’ decision to purchase counterfeit mobile phone in Malaysia. Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) has be deployed for this study, and it identifies the influence of low price, past-experience, religious and ethical factors, attitude, subjective-norm, and perceived behavioral control on the purchase intention of counterfeit mobile phone. Data has been collected through structured questionnaire from 283 respondents who live in Klang Valley, Malaysia. Descriptive, reliability and exploratory factor analysis have been done initially. Correlation and regression analysis have been conducted then. This is an empirical study and the findings reseal that low price, subjective-norm and perceived behavioral control influence significantly for the purchase intention of counterfeit mobile phone. Nevertheless, religious and ethical factors are insignificant in this regard. The study findings will draw the attention of policymakers and academicians to formulate and implement better policy in order to combat the consequences and activities of purchasing counterfeit mobile phones in Malaysia.
