Abstract

Without a doubt, children must acquire digital media literacy in order to keep up with the rapid advancement of contemporary technology. As such, the primary objective of this research is to ascertain the differences in dimensions of digital media literacy skills between boys and girls. Digital media literacy encompasses five dimensions: (a) information and operational skills; (b) safety and security skills; (c) communication and participation skills; (d) content creation and innovation skills; and (e) problem solving skills. The research collected data from 308 children, both girls and boys, ranging in age from 7 to 15 years, who resided at the Pusat Perumahan Rakyat (PPR), which is home to the B-40 resident group. The findings indicate that there are significant differences in the dimensions of digital media literacy skills between boys and girls. Girls, in particular, have significantly more skills than boys in the dimensions of (a) content creation and innovation and (b) problem solving. These defy common understanding that girls often lack behind boys in terms of education and digital adoption. Despite this, both boys and girls at the PPR still have low digital literacy and require assistance to become digitally resilient children.
