Abstract
This study aims to examine the preferences and justification of teachers and students when giving and receiving written corrective feedback through Google Doc in Arabic language teaching and learning at a higher learning institution in Malaysia. Two questionnaires were adapted and distributed to 93 students in an Arabic Academic Writing course. Four lecturers who teach the course also answered the survey. A semi-structured interview was also conducted on two lecturers and five students to identify their justifications of feedback. Descriptive analysis on the quantitative data was performed using SPSS while thematic analysis via Atlas.ti was employed to analyse the interviews. The findings showed that teachers chose indirect written corrective feedback with metalinguistic comments while students preferred direct written corrective feedback with metalinguistic comments. The development of metacognitive skill and heavy workload were among the reasons of lecturers’ preferences for feedback. Lack of confidence to self-correct mistakes and time constraint to find answers were the basis given by the students. Pedagogical suggestions are provided to help Arabic students and lecturers to use Google Doc in receiving and giving written corrective feedback.
