Abstract

Transgender is referred for those who wish to be of the opposite sex from which they must exhibit strong and persistent cross-gender identification. they can be male-to-female transgender or female-to-male transgender. In Malaysia, the local term for male-to-female transgender (MTF) is maknyah, pondan or bapok. The terms claimed by this community themselves. Being labeled as sexual deviants and generally discriminated by the society, the majority of the maknyah do not get a decent job. Thus, many of them end up in the sex trade. In a 2002 study on 507 maknyah, it found that 92% of the respondents had received payment for sex, even though only 54% claimed they were sex workers. Thus, they are at the high risk for contracting Human Immunodeficiency (HIV) and later on predisposed to developing Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS)
