Abstract
Early Tanjong Malay life is understated. The Bahasa Melayu newspapers then provided a window to the dynamics of her cultural and intellectual expressions. The early Pulau Pinang periodicals were all described as Jawi Peranakan-led editorials and publishing initiatives. The first newspaper in Pulau Pinang was Tanjong Penegeri, which appeared in 1894. It has a twice a week frequency. The newspaper stopped publication the year after. The name Tanjong Penegeri was thought to be a corruption of Tanjong Penaga, the space and place that occupied the geographical cape – its name plundered as George Town.
