Abstract

The educational context in Malaysia emphasizes the concept of high-level thinking skills (HLTS) to produce a generation that is critical and creative. This aims to produce students who are able to cultivate the practice of thinking in preparation for the increasingly challenging of the 21st century. Thus, this study aims to discuss teachers' understanding of high-level thinking skills and strategies used by Arabic language teachers in applying high-level thinking skills in the teaching and learning of KSSR Arabic. This study uses case study design and interview methods, observation and document analysis as data collection procedures. A total of three Arabic language teachers at Sekolah Kebangsaan Puchong Indah were selected as study participants. The findings of the study show that, the study participants have not yet fully understood the meaning of thinking culture and HOTS as intended by the MOE 2011. However, Arabic language teachers have tried to apply these elements in teaching and learning. The application of KBAT covers planning, management, implementation as well as delivery and evaluation aimed at imparting knowledge effectively. However, the results of the study show that the application of HOTS in the teaching and learning of Arabic by Arabic language teachers is moderate and positive. It is hoped that these findings can provide an initial impression to educational practitioners to improve their knowledge, skills and planning based on HOB so that they can implement it firmly in teaching.
