Abstract

Halal is not only for foods but also for other consumer products or services. Halal practices do not stop once the product has been manufactured, as a halal product could easily lose its halal status if it is contaminated during transport and storage prior to retailing. Hence, given that logistics bridges the gap between the point of production and the point of consumer purchase, the logistics of halal products are fundamental to ensuring the integrity of halal products at the point of consumption. Logistics plays a key role in protecting the halal integrity of halal food through proper transportation, storage and handling along the supply chain until it reaches its final destination. To prevent contamination during distribution, core logistics activities, such as transportation, warehousing, material handling and packaging, must be Shariah-compliant. Recently, interest in intelligent packaging, which can show the color change of the packaging film according to the state of the food and evaluate the quality of freshness of the packaged food in real-time, is increasing. Intelligent packaging food indicator is an innovative technology to prevent food contamination and ensure food quality and safety. Curcumin, one of the most well-known natural pigments, has received a lot of attention for its excellent functional properties and ability to change colour with changes in pH. Curcumin is a cost-effective and abundant biomaterial with various biological properties such as antioxidant, antibacterial, antiviral, antitumor, and anti-inflammatory. Intelligent packaging systems have been actively developed using the functional properties of curcumin. This is due to colour itself being inherently ubiquitous and capable of conveying valuable messages about the food packaging status. Therefore, through the halalan-toiyibban food indicator, halal assurance is addressed in all key stages in the logistics and supply chain activities to ensure that all halal products are protected from non-halal or non-hygiene elements or any potential contaminants until they arrive at their final destination.
