Abstract

The management of scheduled (hazardous) wastes poses significant risks to human health and the environment. This study evaluates the effectiveness of scheduled waste management practices at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) Kuantan Campus, focusing on packaging, labelling, and storage. A survey questionnaire based on the Department of Environment's "Guidelines for Packaging, Labelling and Storage of Scheduled Wastes in Malaysia" was distributed to 13 scheduled waste handlers. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and scores were grouped into 'Poor', 'Fair', and 'Good' categories. The results revealed significant deficiencies across all three aspects. For packaging, 6 participants (46.2%) scored 'Poor', 6 (46.2%) scored 'Fair', and only 1 (7.7%) scored 'Good'. For labelling, 3 (23.1%) were 'Poor', 8 (61.5%) were 'Fair', and 2 (15.4%) were 'Good'. Storage was the most problematic area with 12 participants (92.3%) scoring 'Poor' and only 1 (7.7%) scoring 'Fair', with no participant achieving 'Good'. The mean overall score was 25.92 out of 62, with scores ranging from 11 to 38. The study concludes that the effectiveness of scheduled waste management at IIUM Kuantan Campus is inadequate, particularly in storage practices. These findings highlight an urgent need for comprehensive training programs and stricter enforcement of existing guidelines to ensure the safety of the campus community and the environment.
