Abstract

This paper presents a project-based learning (PBL) implementation in the Instrumentation and Measurement course across three academic semesters. The project was designed to translate course concepts, including sensor technology, signal conditioning, calibration, data acquisition, actuator control, and performance evaluation, into practical engineering artefacts. Students completed the project through two tracks: a hardware track using ESP32, sensors, actuators, and display interfaces, and a simulation track using MATLAB Simscape to model instrumentation systems. The project was delivered through weekly milestones from Week 8 to Week 14, covering topic selection, block diagram development, sensor or model integration, control logic, calibration, signal conditioning, data display, system testing, uncertainty evaluation, presentation, demonstration, and final report submission. Across three semesters, 36 student projects were implemented in domains such as pressure and flow monitoring, temperature control, vibration and motion detection, smart agriculture, water level regulation, and distance-based automation. Student outputs included working prototypes, simulation models, calibration graphs, sensor data plots, control responses, technical reports, and live demonstrations. Evaluation was conducted using rubric-based presentation and report assessment, together with CLO and PO attainment analysis. The results showed that the PBL structure supported strong student performance in hardware and simulation implementation, with overall CLO attainment above 78%. Student satisfaction also indicated positive learning perception, with 91% reporting stronger theory practice connection and 93.3% agreeing that anomaly investigation improved their understanding of measurement uncertainty. However, weaker performance in methodology, results interpretation, uncertainty analysis, and referencing indicates the need for improved technical reporting scaffolding.
