Abstract
This study investigates the effects of Trihoney, a blend of honey from Trigona sp., Mellifera sp., and Dorsata sp., on hematological and lipid profiles in hyperlipidemic New Zealand male white rabbits. Polyphenols in Trihoney were identified and quantified using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC). Thirty rabbits were divided into six groups and fed different diets for 12 weeks. Four groups received a 1% high-cholesterol diet (HCD): one served as the HCD control, one received atorvastatin, and two were treated with Trihoney at 0.3 g/kg body weight/day (T1) or 0.6 g/kg body weight/day (T2). The remaining groups were fed a commercial pellet diet, with one also receiving 0.6 g/kg body weight/day of Trihoney. Blood samples were collected at baseline and after 12 weeks. Cinnamic acid and hydroxybenzoic acid were the most abundant polyphenols, with concentrations of 4340 ng/mL and 2850 ng/mL, respectively. All HCD-fed rabbits developed hyperlipidemia. Trihoney supplementation improved red blood cell count, hemoglobin, and hematocrit. The higher dose (T2) also normalized elevated white blood cells, lymphocytes, monocytes, and platelets. Total cholesterol (TC) increased across treatment groups, but the HCD+T1 group showed the smallest increase. Trihoney at 0.3 g/kg body weight/day reduced triglycerides (TG) by 30% (p < 0.05). Both LDL and HDL cholesterol levels rose in Trihoney- and atorvastatin-treated rabbits, though increases were less pronounced compared to the untreated HCD group. Trihoney shows potential as a natural dietary intervention to improve lipid and hematological parameters in hyperlipidemic conditions, suggesting a protective role against cardiovascular complications.
