Abstract
Background. Silicone-based resilient denture liners are used to improve load distribution and comfort in complete denture wearers. Their effect on masticatory function has been evaluated in randomized controlled trials using various outcome measures. Materials and methods. A systematic search of PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science was conducted up to September 2023 following PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Randomized controlled trials assessing silicone-based resilient liners in complete denture wearers were included. The primary outcome was maximum bite force. Secondary outcomes included masticatory performance, pain perception, chewing ability, and oral health-related quality of life. Due to heterogeneity in outcome definitions, measurement instruments, and follow-up durations, a meta-analysis was not performed, and the findings were synthesized narratively. Risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane RoB 2 tool. Results. Five randomized controlled trials met the inclusion criteria. Most studies reported increases in maximum bite force, while pain reduction and improvements in patient-reported chewing ability and quality of life were observed in selected trials. However, findings related to objective masticatory performance were inconsistent across studies. The risk-of-bias assessment revealed predominantly “some concerns,” mainly related to blinding and selective reporting. Conclusion. The available randomized controlled trials suggest that silicone-based resilient denture liners may improve maximum bite force and patient-reported comfort in complete denture wearers. Evidence regarding objective masticatory performance remains variable. Further well-designed trials with standardized outcome measures and longer follow-up periods are required.
