Abstract

Nonprofit organizations (NPOs) play an important role in the social and community development landscape across all countries worldwide. Their existence supports education, health, poverty reduction, humanitarian work, women’s empowerment, youth development, and other areas where governmental funding support may be limited. Despite their contribution, many NPOs remain financially unsustainable due to heavy dependence on donor funding, fundraising, short-term grants, and unpredictable external assistance. This has made income generation and financial sustainability increasingly important concerns for the sector. This narrative review examines how entrepreneurial mindset adoption may support income generation and financial sustainability among Tanzanian NPOs. It focuses on five key dimensions of an entrepreneurial mindset: innovation, opportunity recognition, proactiveness, calculated risk-taking, and strategic resource mobilization. By shedding light on related literature from social entrepreneurship, nonprofit management, entrepreneurial orientation, and organizational sustainability, this article argues that entrepreneurial mindset adoption can help NPOs diversify income sources, develop mission-aligned social enterprise initiatives, improve resource utilization, and strengthen organizational resilience. At the same time, this review alerts us that entrepreneurial practices must be carefully managed to avoid mission drift, excessive commercialization, and the exclusion of vulnerable beneficiaries. In a nutshell, the article attempts to synthesize relevant literature, contextualize the discussion within Tanzania, and propose a conceptual framework linking entrepreneurial mindset adoption, organizational innovation, income generation, and financial sustainability.
