Abstract
Postgraduate study is often perceived as an exciting and prestigious journey, yet its daily reality can sometimes feel challenging and routine. Within the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), however, postgraduate study should be understood not merely as an academic opportunity but as a privilege and a blessing. Students from diverse nationalities share a unique intellectual environment that many others can only aspire to experience. Familiarity, however, can cause individuals to overlook the value of such blessings, reflecting the wisdom: Āfat al-niʿam al-ilf—the affliction of blessings is familiarity with them. The author reflects on his own uncertain journey towards admission to IIUM, which strengthened his appreciation of the opportunity. Every blessing is also a test, and its preservation requires shukr (gratitude). True gratitude extends beyond saying Alhamdulillah; it involves using knowledge, education, and opportunities in ways that please Allah and benefit humanity. Viewing postgraduate study as a blessing transforms challenges into meaningful responsibilities and sustains a sense of purpose throughout the academic journey.
