Abstract
Recent research trends in sentiment analysis are increasingly focused on understanding and extracting emotions from social media comments from content on various platforms. This study aims to identify emotional cues in language to understand public sentiment and social dynamics better. Word-level sentiment analysis, in particular, plays a crucial role in interpreting human emotions, providing essential insights for anticipating and responding to societal issues. Despite growing research interest in sentiment analysis, there is a noticeable lack of research on emotion-labeled corpora in Malay. To date, no comprehensive studies or publicly available datasets have been published to develop a Malay emotional corpus, which remains underdeveloped. To address this gap, the present study aims to develop MySentiMentH, a lexicon of affective norms for Malay sentiment words within the context of mental health, enabling more targeted analysis of emotional language, especially as it appears in responses to major societal events. The primary objective of this research is to review existing techniques and methodologies for developing emotional corpora and to adapt these approaches to the creation of MySentiMentH. The methodology includes detailed discussions on data collection, the design of the MySentiMentH lexicon, and the materials and procedures used in its development. The findings demonstrate the feasibility of constructing a Malay sentiment lexicon with emotional labels. MySentiMentH is shown to be a valuable resource for future research and applications, as it provides a foundation for the continued development of a comprehensive Malay emotional corpus. This corpus can serve as an effective sentiment-monitoring tool for better understanding human emotions from words used on social media.
