Abstract
At the opening of Sharāb al-ʿĀshiqīn, Hamzah Fansuri explains that he writes in Malay for readers who do not know Arabic or Persian. His remark offers a useful point of entry into the place of Prophetic reports in the work. Hamzah’s poetry, metaphysical vocabulary, and engagement with Persian Sufi literature have attracted sustained attention, but the reports he attributes to the Prophet have seldom been examined as a body of evidence in their own right. This paper considers a small selection of those reports, attending to their wording, provenance, and function within Hamzah’s exposition. Preliminary takhrīj reveals materials of differing status: established ḥadīths, fuller or contested variants, and sayings whose authority arose largely through their circulation in Sufi literature. Hamzah uses them to order conduct, deepen the disciplines of the spiritual path, and articulate questions of self-knowledge and dependence upon God. The discussion accordingly distinguishes the critical status of a report from the authority it acquired in reception. It also places Hamzah’s Malay exposition within a wider Persianate and Islamicate setting shared, in different forms, by Malay and Turkic Muslim societies. The comparison does not posit a direct line of borrowing. It draws attention instead to a common historical process by which inherited Islamic learning was transmitted, interpreted, and given expression in new scholarly languages. The paper forms the opening study of a wider investigation into hadith in the works securely attributed to Hamzah Fansuri.
