Abstract
This article examines the fragility of ceasefire arrangements in contemporary conflicts and argues that the mere announcement of a cessation of hostilities does not necessarily constitute genuine peace. It highlights the widening gap between diplomatic declarations and realities on the ground, where continued military pressure, political mistrust, and competing strategic objectives can rapidly undermine attempts at de-escalation. The article contends that ceasefires constructed without credible enforcement mechanisms, sustained diplomatic engagement, and mutual political commitment risk becoming temporary pauses rather than meaningful pathways towards conflict resolution. Particular attention is given to the dangers of fragmented diplomacy, in which conflicting actors interpret ceasefire arrangements according to their respective military and political interests. Such conditions allow violence to persist even as international actors continue to invoke the language of peace. The article further argues that the erosion of trust in negotiated settlements weakens the credibility of international mediation and exposes the limitations of diplomacy when geopolitical calculations continue to override humanitarian imperatives. It concludes that sustainable peace cannot be achieved through symbolic ceasefires alone. Instead, effective conflict resolution requires enforceable commitments, consistent international engagement, and a willingness among belligerents and external stakeholders to address the underlying political and strategic causes of conflict.
